"The Cornerstone" Renovation 2010
"The Cornerstone"
6120 Main Street
Bailey, NC 27807
the present...
The building was the first Post Office in the Town of Bailey. It was built in 1910 and sits on the edge of the Bailey United Methodist Church parking lot. Before it was purchased by the Church, it was used as an antique refinishing business by a former Pastor, the Rev. Dan Meadows. The Church purchased the building and 4 lots on August 27, 1986 for $21,000. The lots are currently the parking lot.
The building was empty for a number of years. In May of 1993, after an extensive renovation, it became a one bedroom studio apartment. In 1993, Will Hoyle was the first Duke Student Intern to occupy the new space.
Recently, "The Cornerstone" building was deemed no longer livable. The roof had leaked and created mold and mildew along with a healthy colony of termites. After much discussion, it was decided to renovate the building.
The interior was completely demolished; the floor was dug up, and some of the attic roof beams replaced. The old deck was removed and the windows and doors were replaced. An efficient living space was created with a bedroom, handicap-accessible bathroom and kitchen/den.
This starts a new era of living arrangements for our Duke Student Interns. Hopefully this building will be used for many more years to come to house those students as they gain experience in learning church worship.
